Israel Strikes Iran’s Arak Nuclear Complex

Damage to containment dome and heavy water plant at Iran’s Arak nuclear complex after Israeli airstrike

In an unprecedented escalation, Israel has conducted a targeted military operation against Iran’s Arak nuclear complex, delivering direct hits to two critical components of the site: the containment dome of a nuclear reactor and distillation towers at the nearby heavy water facility.

According to regional sources, the missile strikes occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning. Satellite imagery and thermal data suggest that at least one missile penetrated the upper structure of the reactor dome, while a second strike severely damaged distillation infrastructure associated with Iran’s heavy water production capabilities — a key component in plutonium-based reactor development.

The Arak complex, located southwest of Tehran, has long been a subject of international scrutiny. The facility was partially decommissioned and redesigned under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA), which Iran claims to have respected until the U.S. withdrawal in 2018. However, intelligence agencies have expressed concern in recent years over the site’s renewed activity.

Israeli military officials have not officially confirmed the strike, but anonymous defense sources quoted in Israeli media outlets described it as a “preventive action” aimed at delaying Iran’s nuclear breakout capability. The strike follows weeks of heightened tensions, including reports of Iranian ballistic missile tests and growing Hezbollah activity in the region.

Iranian state media confirmed the explosions but claimed that no nuclear materials were released and that the situation is “under control.” The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) issued a statement condemning the attack as a “nuclear terrorism act” and vowed “severe retaliation at a time and place of its choosing.”

International watchdogs, including the IAEA, have not yet verified the extent of the damage. However, nuclear safety experts are raising alarms over the risks of releasing radioactive material from partially operational nuclear structures. While Arak’s reactor was not fully operational, the infrastructure damaged in the strike plays a critical role in Iran’s plutonium production capability.

The global community has begun reacting to the incident. Russia and China have condemned the strike as a violation of international law, while the United States has issued a cautious statement calling for “restraint from all sides.” The United Nations Security Council has scheduled an emergency session to address the escalating conflict and the threat to global non-proliferation norms.

This marks the first known instance of a direct attack on a nuclear facility by Israel within Iranian territory. If confirmed, it sets a dangerous precedent in regional military confrontations — one that could spiral into a broader Middle East war with devastating consequences.
